Undersheriff John M. Becker

Undersheriff John Becker has an extensive law enforcement background spanning 27 years. He began his career in 1997 as a New York City Police Officer, during which he was awarded numerous commendations by the District Attorney’s Office of New York County for felony arrests, including criminal possession of a firearm and robbery. He amassed impressive arrest statistics during his five year tenure with the NYPD, while in the performance of uniform and plain clothes patrols.

In 2002, he joined the ranks of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office as a Deputy Sheriff. During that time, he was assigned to the First District Court Detention Bureau, Headquarters Bureau, Enforcement Bureau, and Domestic Violence Bureau. He became certified as a General Topics Instructor, which as a former Middle School and High School teacher at the Bayport-Bluepoint School District, was a logical and seamless fit. He also provided invaluable expertise and real-world scenarios to all new Correction Officer and Peace Officer recruits from agencies across Long Island and New York City.

Additionally, Undersheriff Becker was instrumental in providing in-service training to our Deputy Sheriffs and outside agency Police Officers as a certified Breath Analysis Instructor, DWI Detection and Standardized Field Sobriety Instructor, Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement Instructor, and Radar-Lidar Instructor. He was also a certified Drug Recognition Expert who was often called upon by our Deputies and agencies throughout Suffolk County to perform evaluations on persons arrested for being under the impairment of drugs and/or alcohol. From 2008-2012 he was assigned to the Highway Enforcement Bureau where he personally effected over many arrests for DWI/DUI Drugs and served as a Field Training Officer to newly assigned Deputies to that command.

In 2013, he was elected to the Deputy Sheriffs Police Benevolent Association Executive Board and was subsequently elected to President, where he served proudly for ten years. During that time, he worked in tandem with the Sheriff and County in negotiating two collective bargaining agreements. Additionally, successfully lobbied for the passage of four individual pieces of State Legislation impacting all Deputy Sheriffs, served as a liaison to the County and State Legislature, advocated for all disciplinary matters, and worked collaboratively to ensure the contractual benefits of his members.

Undersheriff Becker earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from the State University of New York College at Cortland.
